As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride was written by Cary Elwes, one of the stars of one of my favorite movies. The book tells how he came to be in The Princess Bride and then explains the behind-the-scenes movie making process, which is fascinating.
But wait, there’s more–there are excepts throughout the book from other people involved in the production–except for those who are sadly no longer with us. It’s a nice way of introducing other perspectives (although, spoiler alert, everyone involved seems to have been very nice and had a great time–this is not a nasty tale of back-stabbing and intrigue).
The tone is peppy and charming. Elwes appears to like almost everyone he meets (and everyone he meets is charmed by him). It’s a comforting book, much like watching The Princess Bride for the tenth time.
Since I’m a fan of both the actor and the movie, I can’t say if non-fans would be interested, but I quite enjoyed this quick read. And now I have to see if I can find The Princess Bride to re-watch.

I love that movie too. So many great lines from it too! So, you’ve watched and re-watched the movie and read the book about the making of the movie, but have you read the book the movie was based upon?

I have read the book that the movie that the book about the making of the movie was based on. I can’t remember which I experienced first–knowing me, the book. I’ve re-read it so many times. It’s just SO good. I can see why William Goldman considers it his favorite work!
In Elwes’ book, Goldman says that he’d been working on the sequel Buttercup’s Baby ever since, but he just can’t make it work. I’m torn–if it’s as good as Bride, then I want it. Now. But if it’s not, perhaps it’s just as well that it’s stuck in his head!
